Fernando was born in Manila in the Philippines and moved to New Jersey with his parents and older sister at the age of six. After attending parochial grade school and Catholic high school, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2016. Fernando worked as an Army engineer officer for four years, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas before returning to Notre Dame for graduate studies in theology. He graduated in May 2023 from Notre Dame's Master of Divinity program, which included courses in theology and pastoral ministry.
Fernando and his wife Libby have been married for four years and live in South Bend with their dog, Kevin. His interests include ice cream, Brandon Sanderson novels, and San Antonio Spurs basketball.
